“When the Sun Goes Down”

I am so lucky to have met Kylee Davis. Not only is she my favorite New Zealand designer, she is also a true inspiration to all artists + moms worldwide.  Kylee knows knitwear.  Her pieces are truly special… full of life!  Made in New Zealand… materials, designs + creations and all!  Kylee created this red dress as a sample piece for media and photos.  When I first laid eyes on the dress, it was NEED at first sight!  As there weren’t any duplicates of the piece, Kylee graciously offered to make me my own, specially tailored to me.  WOW!  Like a kid in a candy store, I was overjoyed.  She took the measurements herself which made it just that much more special.

 ♥ My Love Dress… I love it!!!

Q&A with Kylee:

What is the name of this dress and what line did it come from?
The name of the dress came from a title of a song “When the Sun Goes Down”. This dress is from my debut collection “Armour and Rebelle” {Winter 2011}.

Where did your inspiration for this piece come from?
The inspiration for the dress came from many places. One of the major influences was that I
wanted to create a cocktail party style dress in knit fabric, seeing that is what I specialise in.
I wanted to play with the contrast of the fabric which was knitted on commercial industrial
electronic knit machines against the contrast of all the work done by hand. The cable platting
effect on the dress took many hours of hand sewing and working by hand to create a shape that
was beautiful and unique as well as flattering to the body.

Why did you make only a sample piece?
When I design collections there are a number of criteria I am aiming to fulfill. For example, the
collections are made in limited numbers and are made in New Zealand. I specialise in knitwear
which naturally lends itself to jumpers and cardigans. This dress is not something you would
typically see in a knitwear collection. The hours involved in producing a piece like this can
make it prohibitive to take to market as an everyday piece. The pieces like this are important as
they create media interest for a brand. I was very happy when you commissioned the piece to
celebrate your 4th wedding anniversary on Valentine’s Day. ♥
